Join our REEF SUPPORT CREW — Dive with purpose to track coral reef health and support long-term protection of fragile marine habitats.
Help survey reef structure, track coral growth, and contribute to real science and conservation in the Verde Island Passage. This Reef Support Crew dive experience supports local marine protection efforts by turning diver observations into data that helps monitor reef health and guide coral restoration.

REEFlections is about taking a closer look at what’s growing on the reef— not just who’s swimming above it. From hard corals and algae to sand, sponge, and rubble, the reef’s cover reveals a lot about its condition.
These underwater observations act like a reef check-up—revealing signs of recovery, stress, or change. A coral-rich reef often signals resilience, while too much algae or rubble may point to overfishing, bleaching, or other disturbances. By tracking these patterns over time, REEFlections builds a long-term picture of reef health.
The data collected supports Blue Alliance Philippines and the management of Marine Protected Areas along North Mindoro’s coastline—helping to guide real conservation where it’s needed most.
Diver preparing to capture images
Each dive contributes to reef monitoring and protection
Divers pair up and take on one of two roles following a set transect line laid above the reef.
The Photographer — Using a camera mounted on a monopod, the photographer captures a top-down image every metre along the 25m line. These “photo-quadrats” create a visual record of coral and substrate coverage that can be analysed back on land.
The Spotter — The spotter swims just above the line, recording what appears directly beneath it at set intervals—hard coral, algae, sponge, sand, rubble, and more—using an easy-to-learn code on a waterproof slate.
Each dive captures both quantitative and visual data that contributes to a long-term record of reef conditions.
Our Reef Support Crew team is in the water with you the entire time to support correct identification, survey technique, and safe data collection.
As part of the Reef Support Crew, you’re not just diving—you’re contributing valuable data that helps track the health of coral reefs over time. With guidance from our field team, your observations play a direct role in supporting reef monitoring and conservation planning.
What to Expect:
Morning check-in, gear fitting, and REEFlections briefing
Land-based training in assessment and survey technique
First dive: lay the transect and begin your REEFlections survey
Lunch break onboard or on a nearby beach
Second dive at a new reef site to continue data collection
Afternoon data review and interpretive debrief
Receive a certificate of contribution, and later, a post-trip report
Every REEFlections dive adds to a growing record of reef condition—helping local marine managers make better decisions to protect corals, ecosystems, and the communities that depend on them.
