Shark Quest

Join our ‘REEF SUPPORT CREW’—dive with purpose to protect sharks through science.

Help deploy underwater cameras, document shark sightings, and contribute to real science & conservation in the Verde Island Passage. This ‘Reef Support Crew’ dive experience supports local marine protection efforts by turning diver observations into data that helps protect sharks and rare reef species.

Many shark sightings in the Verde Island Passage remain anecdotal — By helping collect credible scientific data your participation provides the evidence needed to guide conservation and protect shark populations before they disappear from these biodiverse waters — Shark Quest supports Blue Alliance Philippines, co-manager of Marine Protected Areas along North Mindoro’s coastline.

Our Quest

Shark Quest is all about discovery.

We focus on the Tatlong Pulo archipelago near Calapan to document the presence, distribution, and behaviour of reef and pelagic sharks. Along the way, we also record rare and ecologically important species like Napoleon wrasse, groupers, and schooling fish.

At the heart of our effort is the deployment of Remote Underwater Video (RUV) cameras, placed gently on the seabed to capture undisturbed glimpses of reef life—without diver presence.

Each RUV deployment is a surprise. One day it’s a thresher shark or a spawning school of jacks. Other days, it’s nothing—but even absence tells us something. Every frame deepens our understanding of how these reef systems function and helps shape more effective protection.

This initiative supports Blue Alliance Philippines, co-managers of North Mindoro’s Marine Protected Areas. With your help, diver participation becomes valuable data—evidence needed to guide real conservation.

Your Role

As part of the Reef Support Crew, you’re not just a diver—you’re a vital part of the research team. Your participation helps gather the data needed to shape marine conservation policy.

Here’s how your day unfolds:

  • Early morning meet-up for setup and orientation, after which we depart for the boat trip along the Verde Island Passage to the Islands of Calapan
  • Deploy the RUV cameras at selected reef sites alongside our field team, and continue with a guided Coral Reef Safari dive
  • Using the RUV recording window, join a second guided Coral Reef Safari dive, to explore nearby reefs in this seldom dived location.
  • Enjoy lunch on board or on a nearby beach while the cameras continue recording
  • Retrieve the RUVs and return to base
  • Review the day’s footage to identify species, behaviours, and notable sightings, and record these findings for scientific analysis and local conservation planning.
  • Final wrap up, where you receive a certificate of participation, acknowledging your contribution to marine science. A few days later you’ll receive a digital report showing your contribution to the project.

Why Sharks Matter

Sharks play a vital role in keeping marine ecosystems in balance. As predators, they regulate the food chain, control fish populations, and contribute to coral reef health by removing weak or diseased individuals from the ecosystem.

Unfortunately, shark populations in Southeast Asia are in serious decline due to habitat loss, overfishing, and increasing demand in global trade markets.

In the Verde Island Passage—home to one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world—sharks like the Pelagic Thresher Shark and various reef species have been spotted yet remain largely undocumented.

Without proper data, protection isn’t possibleThat’s why we created Shark Quest.
